The principal of a local college has asked you to write a report on the advantages and disadvantages of working abroad in the summer holidays. She would like to know if the college should recommend 'working holidays' to its students.

A report on students' experiences of working abroad

Introduction

Currently, approximately 25 per cent of Hawthorne College students work abroad during the summer break. This report aims to show the benefits and drawbacks of working overseas in order to decide whether the college should recommend the experience to its students.

To prepare for this report, a sample of 100 students were interviewed, 23 of whom had worked abroad. This is a summary of their comments.

Benefits

According to the students interviewed, working overseas during the summer holidays can bring several benefits. Most of all, students can improve their foreign language skills by working in a non-English speaking country. This may help them get a better job in the future. Additionally, learning about a different culture and way of life makes people more open-minded. A further advantage is that students may become more confident when they learn practical skills to help them live independently later in life, for example, finding accommodation and cooking for themselves.

Drawbacks

However, a large number of interviewees mentioned drawbacks as well. Students who need to study over the summer will find it difficult to do so while working abroad. Most significant of all are finance issues: only a minority of students are able to afford travel expenses, accommodation and visas. In addition, students may have to take low-income jobs if they are not fluent in the local language, so they may struggle to cover their expenses.

Conclusion and recommendation

Working abroad may improve students' language skills and confidence. However, students often need to earn money during the holidays to support their studies and working abroad may not provide the opportunity to save. Also, the cost of travel means that only students who are able to afford it have the chance to do this. Therefore, the college should only recommend working abroad if there is financial support from the college for students that need it.

Tips

  1. The basic structure of a report is usually the same:
    • Introduction (including the purpose of the report and how the data was collected)
    • Findings (including benefits and drawbacks if appropriate)
    • Conclusion and recommendations.
  2. Use headings for each section.
  3. Use formal vocabulary (e.g. Currently, ... in order to ... Therefore, ...) to give the report a formal style.
  4. The ideas and conclusions should be objective. Use non-personal subjects (e.g. This report aims to … ) and passive structures (e.g. 100 students were interviewed).
  5. You can also use may to show that something is not certain (e.g. This may help them get a better job in the future).

Would you like to work abroad during your holidays? Probably not, since some of the countries are really in danger, without any security and your friend or family's accompany, that will become really bad. if you have already visited or you realise that you have enough confidence with that country, you have a chance to work there

Living abroad Currently 40 per cent of the young people in Brazil are travelling to try a life abroad. This report aims to show the benefits and the drawbacks of the work out of your own country. To prepare this report 200 young people abroad were interviewed and almost everything about foreigner life were said. Benefits Almost 100 per cent of the youth living abroad revealed that becoming more independent in another language speaking country can be extremely challenge but also very open- minded. Getting in touch with other cultures, places and habits helped them to improve themselves as a person and see the world from a different perspective, with so much love and respect. Drawbacks Something that was also mentioned by some of them is that living abroad can be a lonely life in the beginning which could lead some of them to depression feelings and thoughts. Once you are young living abroad your mind also create a division between your country and where you are living, making you feel like not belonging to any of the places. Conclusion and recommendation Living abroad can be very challenging but also a start for a huge change in pleople’s life. Some of this changes has the power to teach many lessons the life has to offer ,including how we improve our way of thinking and how the whole world works. To Learn a new language,to get to know how to behaviour in certain circumstances in other culture’s way it’s really valuable and precious when comes to new beginning as a foreigner.

I would have worked abroad during my holidays when I was a teenager, but my parents didn't allowed me to do this, because they believed I was too young.

I strongly believe that working overseas brings more benefits than drawbacks if the person can afford everything related to travel. Also, is important to have a wide domain of the language for the country that you are interested in. Therefore you should plan with plenty of time everything as budget, clothes, tickets, visa processes, etc.

In General, I am an international student abroad right now and I have worked in many small and big companies. I would say it is not easy to work abroad there are some benefits and drawbacks. Of course, I faced also financial issues despite you work in any company. It would not be ease of commuting, and your payment will be cutted from tax. I can not do as volunteering in any organisation, here because I should pay my rent and insurance. I know around me that some students want to do volunteering in non English countries or reverse, but I have my dismay how to finance all expensive.

Volunteering jobs in my country are hard to come by. You can't wake up one day in my country and think you can go out and apply for jobs with the certainty of getting it even if you meet the requirements. Every job is secured with connection. You don't know anybody means you are not getting anything. I remember my experience looking for placement for my industrial training, which is a prerequisite to completing the penultimate year. I nearly trekked the length of my city in search of a company to work in gratis, without payment. But I didn't get any until one day I took the bull by the horns and approached the human resource manager in one of the companies I have applied to. I pleaded with him, telling him the importance of working with them. Finally, he considered my application and I started the job the next day. Note that while I was repeatedly writing applications to the company, a number of applications had been granted with connection.

I would like to work abroad during my holiday. I think to work abroad, there are many advantages but there are some disadvantages too. Even so, I would like to work abroad during my holiday. I will give the advantages and disadvantages in detail. I’ll explain advantages to work abroad. By doing that, we can acquire our foreign languages skills. Because if work abroad, we have to use our foreign languages even if we can’t speak at all. And through working abroad, we can experience and meet people we can’t if we stay at our countries. Also, working abroad during holiday is not thing that everyone can do. That’s why if we can do it, it makes our life more fruitful. On the other hand, there are disadvantages to work abroad. For example, although working, working abroad costs a lot of money. So, we can’t work abroad if we don’t afford financially. And holiday isn’t a long time. We have to come back before we acquire languages skills and cultural knowledges completely. That’s why working abroad may be kind of halfway. There are advantages but also disadvantages to work abroad. However, I believe to work abroad makes me strong. So, even if working abroad has some bad points, I would like to do it!
