Lina: In January, I am going to improve my vocabulary and grammar by reading three pages of a novel every day. I will make a note of five new words and pick one grammar structure in the pages I have read. I will create my own sentences using these words and grammar and I will review them at the end of each week. I aim to take the IELTS exam in April and get a score of eight, which will help me to live abroad or find a job in one of my dream countries.
Ghada: Over the next three months, my goal is to attend online conversation sessions with my friends and lovely teachers as often as I can. I will listen to Lewis Howes and British Council podcasts every day, noting and shadowing all new vocab and phrases. Additionally, I aim to record a video of myself discussing various topics in English every weekday and review all the recordings over the weekend.
Verry: By the end of the year, I aim to prepare for the IELTS exam and save a score of seven or higher. This goal aligns with my resolution for 2025, which is to pursue a master's degree abroad. To improve my English skills, I will study for two hours daily, dedicating 30 minutes to each section: reading, writing, listening and speaking.
Additionally, to make learning more efficient, I will use various devices and AI applications to enhance my English proficiency. These tools help me to practise and track my progress, allowing me to address weaknesses and strengthen my overall skills. By maintaining routine, I am determined to reach my target score and achieve my academic aspiration.
Carmen: In five months, I want to think directly in English without translating from Romanian, so that I can communicate more confidently and reduce my mistakes. To achieve this, I will practise speaking out loud for five minutes a day and focus on real-life situations, even if only in my head (e.g. ordering food). Additionally, I will record myself twice a week to monitor my progress. I will write down any mistakes in my notebook and compare my first recording with my latest one.
Maged: In 2025 I'm looking to speak English fluently by learning about 20–30 new words a day by listening to many English YouTube channels and podcasts, recording to myself while talking in English and listening again to it. Also will record every new word in my copybook and follow live lessons. I'll do all that to be more natural and feel confident while I'm communicating with others. I'll need from three to four months from the start to gain a good result.
We asked a group of English learners to write a SMART goal for their language learning for 2025 and to share it with us. Listen to what they said!
Did you know that you're more likely to achieve your goal if you write it down and tell another person about it?
Writing down your goal makes your strategy clearer and helps you to remember what you plan to do. Telling someone else your goal can make you more likely to continue working towards it, as they can give you extra encouragement.
Now it's your turn to write a SMART goal!
- Think about your language-learning goals for 2025.
- Can you use the SMART method to set at least one goal?
- Share your goal in the comments!
If you want to practise speaking, you can record your response using SpeakPipe voice recorder and post a link to the recording in your comment.
