Hi IWonder,
Thank you for the information. I live in Poland and many surnames here have masculine and feminine forms as well (Kowalski > Kowalska, for example). However, when Poles emigrate to another country their surnames generally stop changing in this way and become fixed in one form, even if it is not a correct form in the Polish language. Perhaps something similar has happened with Ms Petrov(a).
