1. Your favourite cake

Transcript item

Jo: OK. This is a bakery where I can buy really delicious bread. And because we're filming about cakes, I just bought this. This is an ensaïmada. I took a bite already to show you that it's really light and fluffy. It's got sugar on the top and it's typical of the islands Menorca and Mallorca. Delicious. I'm gonna eat it later.

Kirk: This is an apple crumble that my wife made. It's a cake that has got sort of a soft bottom with a little bit of baked apple inside. And then the top just ... the top is crunchier. It's got, I don't know, it's a mixture of oat flakes and pecans and sugar, and I'm not sure what else, but a really yummy cake. They go fast.

Elena: I really like cakes, and my favourite one is the crostata with marmellata made by my grandmother. It's a very simple cake and it is a shortcrust tart made with a buttery pastry and filled with jam. Then it's covered with some dough that are crisscrossed over the jam. I think that the most popular cake in Italy is the tiramisu. It has a base of biscuits dipped in coffee and it's covered with a cream of mascarpone, eggs and sugar and it's sprinkled with cocoa in the top.

Jo: So, yes, I like cakes, I like them a lot. I live in France, and we have lots of delicious cakes like the ones in this cake shop. I think those are my favourite, with lovely fresh raspberries on, or the chocolate éclair with a lovely, creamy chocolate centre. Delicious.

Joe: I love cakes. My favourite cake, I would say, is the chocolate brownie, and especially the one made by my mum. The chocolate brownie is made from a large amount of butter and with eggs, sugar, dark chocolate, flour and cocoa powder. And then you also add a mix of chopped chocolates, could be a mix of white chocolate, milk chocolate, dark chocolate, and also nuts. And ... it's normally ... my preferred version is when it's been put in the fridge, so it's very dense and it has a crunch as well. I think the most popular cake in the UK is probably the Victoria sponge, which is a very classic cake where you could find in every café and in every bakery as well.

Cakes are yummy, sweet treats that often make people happy. From plain cakes to rich, layered ones, they come in many flavours like, vanilla, chocolate or fruit. Cakes can have icing, whipped cream or fresh fruit on top. They are popular at birthdays, parties or any time you fancy something sweet!

My favourite cakes are cheese cake, shortcake with fresh cream and fruits, cream puffs with custard.

Normally I eat cake with a cup of coffee at the cafe.

I feel so happy when I eat cakes.

Popular cakes in my country vary depending on the season, tarts and cheesecakes in autumn and winter, fruits shortcakes and puddings in spring and summer.

Hi everyone!

I like a lot of delicious cakes, especially if somebody makes them for me (I’m joking.)
One of my favorite cakes, without a doubt, is apple cake.
Firstly, it’s a delicious cake, and second, I cook it very quickly.

It’s light and fluffy. It has the apples on the bottom (necessary green, solid apples) and it's soft in the middle, and a little crunch on top.
It’s a fantastic mix of the flavours of sweet and a bit sour.

In Ukraine, where I am from, there are various cakes, and calling something one is very difficult. I prefer soft cakes with custard and sour cherry. It’s incredible flavour    for me.

Well, hello this is Anderson and my favourite cake i'd say is Carrot Cake. It consists of a mixture of a range variety of ingrediants like flour, eggs, milk, butter some peccans if you would like and of course fresh carrots, its very important that the carrots will be fresh to ensure the quality of the biscuit.

Hello! I am from Brazil. Brazilian cuisine is very diverse, and cakes are an important part of our culture. My favorite cakes are corn cake and orange cake.

Corn cake and orange cake share the same base batter, but the difference is in the key ingredient. One has corn, giving it a rustic and rich flavor, while the other uses orange juice, making it fresh and zesty. Both are perfect for an afternoon snack with coffee or tea!

In my country, the most popular cake is egg cake.
It's a simple and traditional recipe, loved by many for its soft texture and mild, sweet flavor. Egg cake is a classic that reminds people of childhood and family gatherings.

My favourite (slightly stretching the definition of a cake) is bučnica (pronounced buch-ni-tza).
It's a rolled pastry filled with cheese and grated squash, similar to Austrian and German strudel but with a bit of a Croatian twist.
I love it because it's a perfect combination of sweet and savoury - it can be eaten as a dessert but I've also had it as the main course on numerous occasions :D

Hi there!

In Chile, a "berlín" is a round, fluffy pastry, usually fried, that is filled with pastry cream, dulce de leche (manjar), or jam. After frying, it’s dusted with powdered sugar to add extra sweetness.

This delightful pastry has its roots in Germany, where it is known as Berliner Pfannkuchen or simply Berliner. It was introduced to Chile by German immigrants in the 19th century and has since become a beloved part of Chilean pastry culture.

Hello! I am from Ukraine. Ukrainian cuisine is very rich in flavours and rather tolerant as for the choice of ingredients for a cake. There are a lot of cakes connected with such specific celebrations  as Christmas or Easter. But every housewife can boast of her own recipes, with enhanced flavours or decorations. My mother-in-law taught me to cook ginger cake (I am very thankful to her). The base is sponge cake made with honey. That is why it's like ginger in colour. You can use any cream and pieces of fruit you have. That is the recipe is rather democratic and flexibile. Just use your imagination, try to show your individuality!

Hi  eugenia_ryzhukn
What a beautiful, colouful table in your photo - it looks so inviting! Your ginger cake sounds really delicious, and I love how you can personalise it however you want. Thanks for sharing!

Best wishes,

This is one of my favorite cakes, which’s made by wood stove. In Kurdistan; we are as Kurdish people eat it with tea or other natural juices that we make from (Orange, Pomegranate, Grapes).

  • The cake has a soft bottom, and it’s covered with walnuts; and filled with (white sugar, white flour, 2-3 chicken eggs, and other ingredients).

Hi daniar.shex,

Thank you for sharing a photo of your favourite cake. It must be really delicious when it's warm and straight out of the wood stove, accompanied by a lovely cup of tea or some juice :-)

Best wishes,

I really like eating cakes. My favourite cake is Black Forest. The cake is originated in Germany and consists of several layers of chocolate sponge cake sandwiched with whipped cream and cherries. It is decorated with additional whipped cream, maraschino cherries and chocolate shavings. The Black Forest cake is the most popular cake in my country. People in my country love eating the cake.

Hi Dipanita,
Black Forest gateau is an absolute classic! I love that combination of rich, moist chocolate cake, the cherry flavour and the cream. It looks amazing too :-)

Best wishes,

I have so many favorite cakes and sweets that I like, and one of them is a Moroccan almond cookie. it's made with almond, egg white and sugar. it also known as Moroccan macaroon. the texture of it is crispy from the oustside and soft from the inside.

Hi Layla_lmrini,

Your Moroccan macaroons look so tasty. I can imagine they must be lovely and crunchy, yet delciously chewy on the inside.
Did you make them yourself?

Best wishes,
