Missing a class

Missing a class

Listen to a student explain why she can't come to class to practise and improve your listening skills.

Do the preparation task first. Then listen to the audio and do the exercises.

Transcript

Student: Excuse me, Ms Henderson?

Teacher: Yes, Diana. How can I help you?

Student: I'm sorry, but I can't come to class next Wednesday. I have a doctor's appointment.

Teacher: OK. Thanks for letting me know.

Student: Is there anything to do at home?

Teacher: Let me just check my notebook. OK, first of all … you need to read chapters 17, 19 and 20 in the book. There are also some articles and a video to watch – those are online. I'll post the links online in the usual place.

Student: Chapters 17 to 20.

Teacher: Yes, except chapter 18. Chapters 17, 19 and 20.

Student: Ah, OK. Um ... is there a deadline?

Teacher: Yes, this Friday. But there's something else. I was going to give you all a practice test.

Student: A practice test?

Teacher: Yes, to help people prepare for the mid-term exam.

Student: Ah. All right.

Teacher: Don't worry, I can send you the practice test by email on Wednesday. Can you send it to me before Friday?

Student: Sure, no problem.

Teacher: And don't forget to bring a certificate from the doctor to the office.

Student: Thanks, Ms Henderson! I'll do that.

Teacher: You're welcome, Diana. Take care.

Recall me when I studying my childhood, our teacher gave us a lot of homework. Some times I had to cheating on my classmate homework because we love played games outside. Then we don't have any gadget like a phone or computer.

I don’t have any studies assignments. I finished my studies last year and the only commitment that I have now is to improve my English skills. Due to COVID, I can't attend any English classes in a private school, so I'm trying to learn on my own. I setting myself homework, every day to listen to stories, select unknown words, write essays, and to practice speaking part. That’s means I have a lot of homework to do every day with a regular schedule. I'm putting too much effort to be fluent in English, and this is my aim for the next year.

When I was a student, I used to like doing homework. Now as a teacher I give homework to my students. Sometimes my students complain because they think that they have a lot to do. In case I realise that they are too busy what I do is to give them more time to do their homework. I think that it is very important for students to have to do homework.

Currently, I have an online English course. It covers speaking, listening, reading, and writing practice through a variety of general interest topics. So I have to spend a lot of time reviewing my grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. This course has a lot of online homework assignments and I need to finish it by weekly deadline.
