1. What type of bread do you eat?

Transcript item

Tina: Yes, I love bread. I probably have it, maybe, maybe once a day or every other day. And I'm videoing this in my local supermarket, and as you can see, lots and lots of types of bread. But very famous for the UK – oh, that's going to be really wobbly – is that one. White bread. White sliced toast bread.

Joanna: OK … I like bread and I like eating lots of different types of bread. This is a coca, which is a typical bread from Catalunya. And here I've cut it open and I've made pa tomaquet, which is a typical Catalan bread. And you slice your bread, you rub the tomato that you cut this way, cut it like that, rub, rub, rub, rub, rub. Then you take the olive oil, and this has got a drizzle of olive oil, salt and there we are, pa tomaquet. And one piece is missing because the person filming this is already eating it!

Jo: I don't eat bread every day, but I probably eat it about four or five times a week. One of my favourite types of bread is a bagel. I've got one here. And depending on what meal I'm eating, I also like things like pita bread or naan bread. And I live in France, so of course the baguette is … I eat that quite often. So yeah, in France the baguette is really popular. People eat it probably with most meals. And in every neighbourhood, every village, you can find a bakery to buy your baguette.

Jonathan: Yes, I eat bread quite a lot, probably four or five times a week, maybe more, but I try to have a range of carbs. So I have some bread, some rice, some pasta. I normally have brown bread, as I heard that's the healthiest type. I like, er, wholemeal, wheat bread. I live in Hong Kong. It's quite a big city and a very international city, with shops selling all different kinds of things, including bread. There are so many different kinds. Some are sweet, some are salted. You can buy whole loaves of bread. You can buy single buns. Yeah, you can really buy all different kinds of bread here.

There are so many different types of bread in the world, and for many people it's a really important part of their daily diet. In this video some people from different countries tell us whether they often eat bread, what type they eat and what types of bread are popular in their country.

We want to hear from you!

I usually eat bread every other week, or more often at some periods. I like whole wheat bread with peanut butter, and take it in the morning as my breakfast options. It's really tasteful and it doesn't require time to make it. Furthermore, I also like pull apart bread and white bread. But whole wheat bread is my first option.

In Indonesia, we have variety of bread options, but the most popular ones are the ones I mentioned above. But on top of all that, Indonesia eat rice as carbohydrate staples which takes more than 80% of Indonesia daily food.

I usually eat bread, two or three times a week. My favourite is ciabatta. I have no idea where it comes from, but I love it, I eat it after toasting it in the oven or in the sandwich maker. I live in New Zealand, where there is a great variety of cultures and we find a great variety of breads.

Hi, in my country es very popular the bread, many people it's a really important part of their daily die. Nowadays, people choose to eat healthy, the consumption of sourdough bread is growing, due to its long fermentation, you can combine it with vegetables, butters, and many creative combinations.

Hi Bernarda,

I've heard as well that sourdough is a healthier option. I really like the flavour too :-)

I don't eat bread often because I've heard bread is considered a refined carbohydrate, although I quite like to eat. A while ago, I found out that sourdough seems to be healthier, and I fell in love with it, even though it's not very common in Taiwan. We normally have rice or noodles.

Hi MJ Hsieh,
Thanks for sharing your recording - I enjoyed listening to it. So you're another sourdough fan! What do you usually eat it with?

Best wishes,

Hi  adeeetbgs,
Thanks for sharing your comment - I enjoyed listening to it. I'm really interested to hear about different food cultures around the world, and that you mainly eat rice as a staple rather than bread.

I hope you enjoyed the topic, and that you'll come back to the Learning hub next time!

The above link is my speaking about bread.

I normally eat bread every day, I eat feno for lunch and dinner, I adore cheese with eggs sandwiches, feno is like the French bread "Baguette" thin but short brown bread which is easy to open into halves and spread cheese in it. In my country Egypt people normally eat "Baladi" it is medium-size, round, brown bread depending on what meals they are eating sometimes they rice or pasta.

Hi Mariam,

Thanks for recording your comment - I enjoyed listening to it, and I hope it was useful practice for you.

Your cheese and egg sandwich sounds delicious :-)

I agree with what you say about making bread, and that the various steps take time, and muscles!

I hope you enjoyed the topic, and that you'll come back to the Learning hub next time.

Hello, I'm Beatrice,

I'm French,  I spent my childhood in Germany and I have now lived in Morocco for almost 40 years. So I'm an Moroccan at heart. I love eating bread, all kinds of bread : fresh french baguette for breakfast with fresh butter and Jam; thinly sliced German grain bread, "Vollkornbrot" with cheese and sweet pickles and salmon; and finally Moroccan bread. It's au round bread. You can buy it in a backrey or better still, make it at home. Bread in arabic language ist "khobz" = "الخبز". There are all kinds of traditionnal bread in Morocco but it always has the same shape, a round shape more or less large (see photos below). We can use all kinds of flour. Personally at home, we do it with wholemeal flour or with a mix between white flour and semolina. We eat bread in all circumstances : for breakfast, snack, lunch and dinner. Bread really has a very special place in Moroccan traditions. It's so good ! :)
